If you are interested in having straighter and more well-aligned teeth, then you may be considering some type of orthodontics to get the job done.  No longer are pre-teens, teens and adults stuck with only a single option when it comes to straightening teeth.  Today’s orthodontic options provide choices for patients so that it’s easier than ever before to get the straighter teeth you desire.

Orthodontics Options For Straighter Teeth

For pre-teens and teens, the age-old option of traditional metal braces is still the most popular choice for straightening teeth.  At this age, many kids feel like it’s a rite of passage to sport a mouth full of metal brackets and wires.  However, today’s traditional options are still a far cry from the ones used decades ago.  In many cases, metal bands and brackets are smaller or have been replaced with less noticeable (and less sharp) plastic options.  Bands and brackets also come in a wide array of colors, making wearing braces as much a fashion statement as a dental necessity.

The procedure for traditional braces is much the same today as it has been for many years, however.  The appliances are typically worn for a time span ranging from one year to three, with a year and half to two years as the typical norm.  Patients must visit the orthodontist on a regular basis, usually every 4 – 6 weeks, at which time wires are tightened, bands are added or replaced, and other work is done to move the straightening process along as intended.

Adults often prefer a more discreet option when they want to straighten their teeth.  More adults than ever are going through with the process of straightening teeth that were never properly aligned when they were younger, or re-straightening teeth that have shifted over time for one reason or another.  Although some adults will still go with the most traditional route – metal – many adults choose to go with a less-noticeable alternative.

The most common alternative to traditional braces is the Invisalign clear alignment system.  This advanced technique allows individuals to have their teeth straightened by wearing a series of clear plastic aligners for a specified period of time.  The aligners are not only less noticeable than metal bands, brackets and wires, but they are more comfortable to wear, result in the need for fewer office visits and do not offer some of the restrictions found with other alignment options.

With this process, a set of clear aligners is created through a computerized process that takes into account the current alignment of teeth and where they need to be in order to be properly aligned.  Each aligner in the series is designed to be worn for approximately two weeks, during which time the aligners gently shift teeth.  Then after the typical wear period, the next aligner in the series is worn to continue the process.  This routine continues until all aligners in the series have been worn and teeth have been effectively moved into the proper position.

If you or a loved one is looking for a way to achieve straighter and more beautiful teeth, it’s best to discuss your options with your dentist or an orthodontist that can provide you with the pros and cons of each option available to you so you can make the most informed decision for yourself.
