Dental bonding is one of the most versatile cosmetic dental procedures that can be used to enhance the look of your teeth.  The procedure offers a number of advantages over other types of dental procedures, although like anything, the pros and cons of any procedure should be carefully weighed before a decision is made on what is the best option for you.

Dental Bonding For Teeth Imperfections

Cosmetic bonding is a relatively simple procedure that is performed by dentists that can improve a variety of tooth imperfections.  The procedure involves adhering a malleable resin material to the exterior of the tooth’s surface, which can then be sculpted and molded as necessary to enhance the overall look of the tooth or teeth.  One of the biggest advantages to this cosmetic option is that it is typically less costly than other types of cosmetic dental procedures.

Another advantage to dental bonding is that it is suitable for small imperfections that would not otherwise necessitate a more involved or costly technique.  Bonding is often used to hide relatively minor imperfections, such as chips, cracks or tooth discoloration.  It can also be used to reshape teeth, add to the length of teeth or close gaps between teeth.  This option is especially beneficial when just a single tooth requires enhancement, since the color and finish of the tooth can match surrounding teeth almost identically.

Although primarily used for cosmetic purposes, tooth bonding can also be used in a more restorative fashion.  For example, if you require a filling due to the removal of tooth decay, many dentists today will use a tooth-colored filling material instead of the more traditional amalgam fillings.  In essence, this material used to fill in the gap left by the removed decayed portion of the tooth is the same bonding material that is used to enhance the cosmetic look of teeth.  The same technique can also be used when a portion of a tooth’s root is slightly exposed above the gum line to protect the sensitive tooth structure.

Not only does the bonding process offer versatility in providing a means for improving various imperfections in the mouth, doing so in the least costly way possible, but it is a relatively quick and painless procedure to have performed.  The dental bonding process can be completed in a single office visit and typically requires under an hour to complete.  During the procedure, the tooth’s surface is slightly etched, roughening it up so that the bonding material better adheres to the surface.  A bonding liquid is then applied to the tooth, followed by a composite resin material that has been matched in color to the surrounding natural teeth.  The material can be molded to the desired shape and then smoothed to create a natural-looking texture.  The resin will be hardened using a laser or ultraviolet light and if needed, final shaping can occur once the material is completely hard.  The final step in the procedure involves polishing the surface to achieve maximum translucency.

There are numerous advantages to cosmetic dental bonding and if you are considering whether this procedure is right for you, it’s best to first discuss all options with your dentist.
