You’ve likely heard your dentist, or your mother, lecture you about the importance of good dental hygiene, but often this phrase is used to imply some intended meaning that is not always fully understood by people.  In order to take the guesswork out of what you should do in order to practice optimal dental hygiene, we’re here to explain some of the basics you should do, and what you should not do, so that your teeth and gums stay as healthy as possible.

For starters, you’ll of course want to brush your teeth every day.  This action should be done at a minimum of twice per day, but preferably more if possible.  Teeth are typically brushed upon waking and then at night before hitting the hay.  This is a critical component of proper dental care because it helps to remove food particles that can lead to the growth of bacteria and plaque.  It is also recommended that you brush after meals, although many people don’t find a way to do that. There are small take-on-the-go finger brushes that you can use that will work in a pinch to clean teeth, but even if you can’t do that, it is suggested that you at least swish your mouth with some clean water in order to dislodge the sugars that may reside on your teeth when your meal is done.

Daily brushing is not quite enough to keep teeth and gums clean and healthy.  You should also floss daily to remove particles and bacteria that may reside between teeth and along the gum line.  Although this habit often doesn’t enjoy the commitment from people that brushing has, it is equally important in the quest to achieve optimal dental health.

Another critical element of maintaining good oral health is to stick to a regular schedule of professional dental hygiene visits.  These are visits that take place at the dentist’s office in which the dentist or a dental hygienist thoroughly and professionally cleans your teeth.  Even if you are good about keeping your teeth and gums well cared for at home, it does not replace the impact that regular cleaning appointments can have on your overall dental health.  These visits also serve as an opportunity to identify any small problems before they turn into more severe issues so your teeth and gums remain healthy.

Most dentists recommend that you schedule dental hygiene appointments every six months, but if you are prone to cavities or are exhibiting signs of gum disease, it may be recommended that you have your teeth professionally cleaned every 3 – 4 months instead.

A few things you should not do in order to maintain optimal oral health are to avoid sweet and sticky foods that bathe your teeth in sugars for long periods of time.  If that craving does strike and you can’t let it pass you by, be sure to at least brush your teeth thoroughly after your indulgence is complete.   Children should be discouraged from sipping for long periods of time on bottles or even cups filled with juice or milk (water is okay).

Proper dental hygiene, both at home and at the dentist’s office, is the key to maintaining optimal oral health.
