It’s no surprise that most people don’t get too excited about oral surgery.  Unfortunately though, it’s a simple reality that most people will have to face some sort of oral surgical procedure at some point in their life.  While you shouldn’t assume that every ache or pain will require a trip to the oral surgeon, there are some issues that may require this type of procedure, whether you’re terribly excited about it or not.  The professionals at Park Dental Care of Astoria are here to help you to better understand the types of issues that may require that you undergo an oral surgery procedure.

A common dental issue that requires oral surgery is impacted wisdom teeth extraction.  Many people face the reality that their mouth is just not quite large enough to accommodate incoming wisdom teeth.  When this is the case, the teeth may become lodged in between the gum and the jawbone, causing pain and possibly movement of existing teeth.  In order to prevent damage to the jaw, shifting of pre-existing teeth or further discomfort, oral surgery can be used to extract the menacing newcomer teeth.

Sometimes when a tooth becomes damaged, is accidentally knocked out, or becomes otherwise severely compromised or infected, a dental professional will suggest that a tooth be removed and replaced with a dental implantDental implants are often preferable to dentures, but they do require minor oral surgery.  During the procedure, a titanium implant, similar to a small screw or post, will be anchored into the jawbone so that the bone can heal around the post and the post can serve as an anchor for a tooth.  Once healed, a permanently anchored false tooth can be attached, making your teeth look like they’re real.

There are also a wide variety of jaw issues that may require oral surgery.  A patient’s jaw can be misshapen or irregular, causing an array of problems such as trouble breathing, speaking, swallowing or eating.  Irregular jaw growth may also lead to problems with dental appliances fitting properly in the mouth.  In order to alleviate these issues, corrective oral or jaw surgery may be a feasible solution.  This can also be the case if the jaw is broken due to some sort of facial trauma.

In the instance that there is ever an abnormal growth discovered within the mouth or oral cavity, oral surgery may be required in order to remove the growth and submit it for biopsy if necessary.  While this form of oral surgery may be minor, it can be quite important in ensuring a patient’s best possible health.

Finally, patients who suffer from sleep apnea and have sought alternative treatment may find relief via oral surgery.  This method for sleep apnea treatment involves removal of palate tissue from the back of the mouth.  This can oftentimes help to clear the airway, thus allowing for easier breathing and sleeping for patients.

On the whole, there is nothing to worry about when it comes to undergoing oral surgery procedures.  The thought of the treatment makes many people uneasy, although the risks to most procedures are minimal, and with anesthetics and/or sedation, the patient feels no pain during the procedure.  Some procedures are followed by a brief period of discomfort, but most people heal quickly and soon put their procedure behind them.
