Dental crowns are one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures performed because the technique can be used to deal with a variety of dental imperfections and issues.  For this reason, this procedure is also considered to be one of the most versatile options available when patients are in need of tooth enhancement, added support or even tooth replacement.

Dental Crowns  For Cosmetic Imperfections

One of the most common uses for crowns is to add strength and support to a natural tooth that has experienced extensive tooth decay or damage.  If decay is the issue, then simply removing the area of decay and then filling the cavity that is left with a dental filling may not provide enough strength and support for proper functioning.  This can lead to further issues with the tooth that will result in the need for more involved procedures.  Instead, the dentist may opt to remove the area of decay and file the remaining tooth structure down so that a crown can be placed on top of the tooth structure that is remaining.  The crown serves as a cover that sits on top of what’s left of the natural tooth structure to provide the look, feel and function of a natural tooth.

This procedure typically requires two visits.  During the first, the area of decay is removed, the tooth is filed down and then a mold is taken so the crown can be fabricated.  A temporary crown is placed over the existing tooth structure to keep it protected and allow it to function and look okay while the permanent crown is being made.  Once completed, a second visit is required to check the permanent crown for proper fit and then to permanently affix it in the mouth.

Crowns are also used in conjunction with other restorative and cosmetic procedures.  For example, if a patient is missing a tooth and requires a dental bridge, the tooth or teeth adjacent to where the missing tooth will be replaced will need to be filed down to prepare them for the adherence of a dental crown.  The crown will be permanently affixed to the teeth surrounding the open space and will also be attached to the pontic, or replacement tooth.  By doing this, the replacement tooth will remain securely in place and will function as if it were a natural tooth.

For patients interested in another alternative to bridges when a tooth is missing, dental implants are a great option.  During this procedure, a titanium rod is surgically implanted into the jawbone in the area where the natural tooth used to be.  Once healed, a dental crown is permanently affixed to the implant, taking the place of the tooth that used to be there and providing the same look, feel and function as if the natural tooth was still in place.

As you can see, there are many uses in the world of dentistry for dental crowns.  This dental option is one of the most versatile ways to repair damaged, decayed or missing teeth with ease.
