It used to be that if you found yourself in a position where you were missing a span of teeth, you had no choice but to opt for removable dentures.  This usually didn’t leave you very happy, since the dentures of yesteryear not only looked unnatural but were often uncomfortable to wear and left wearers unable to eat certain foods, speak properly or use their teeth in other typical ways.

Dentures Options For Teeth Replacement

Luckily, this tooth replacement option has come a long way, and even though the option still exists to wear a denture that is removable, the results are far more natural-looking, functional and comfortable than what you might remember your grandparents or their friends wearing.  In addition to removable options, there are also now options available in which your denture(s) can be permanently secured in your mouth.

As mentioned, removable dentures are still available, and for a variety of reasons, many dentists still recommend this option and/or many patients prefer it.  Although removable, the teeth now look and feel almost as if they were your very own, with excellent color-matching available to resemble any existing natural teeth in the mouth, as well as more natural-looking translucency and a better general overall look.  Some removable dentures are still secured in the mouth by means of a glue-like substance that is applied to the gums each day to hold the apparatus in place. Other options are affixed in the mouth by means of a secure fit, so that the denture just naturally stays in place because it is fit so well to the underlying gum and bone structure.

If you only need a partial denture, it may stay in place through the means of clasps that attach it to adjacent natural teeth on one or both sides of the denture.  In some cases, this can be removable, while in other situations, your dentist may provide you with an option that stays in place more permanently, much like a dental bridge.

One of the biggest advancements in the look, feel and function of this tooth replacement option in recent years is the implant-supported denture.  This is a permanent option in which a denture (series of false teeth) is made to fill a span left by teeth that are lost or must be removed.  A series of dental implants are first surgically implanted into the jawbone to serve as a secure base upon which the denture will be attached so that it can be permanently secured in the mouth.  Once the implants have been given time to sufficiently heal, the denture is affixed to the titanium posts and holds the replacement teeth securely in place.  This makes teeth look as natural as if they were your own and also makes them feel comfortable and natural, removing many of the restrictions that may accompany removable options.

If you are in need of dentures, there is no longer a need to fear that you will be left with a mouth full of unnatural and uncomfortable teeth.  Today’s denture options will leave you with teeth that feel almost as natural as if they were your very own and will provide you with choices so that you get the best solution to fit your personal needs and budget.
