If you are among the many adults who lament over the fact that your teeth were never straightened as a teen, you may be wondering if you should take the plunge and embark on a teeth-straightening mission at this time.  Likely, you have already heard about Invisalign, a clear alignment system for straightening teeth, or a similar brand that works in much the same fashion.  If so, you may be wondering if this is a good choice for you.

Invisalign Alignment System

In order to answer that question, it’s best to look at the benefits and drawbacks of the Invisalign system.  Many adults, as well as teens, feel that one of the biggest benefits of this system is that since the aligners used to move teeth into position are clear, they are virtually unnoticeable.  This fact alone makes it much easier to consider orthodontic work at a time when it is not the norm to be wearing braces.

In addition to being virtually unnoticeable due to the clear plastic material that the aligners are made from, another benefit is the comfort factor associated with this method of orthodontia.  Rather than having to deal with sharp metal bands and wires that can scrape or even cut the inside of your mouth or tongue, the smooth aligners are much more comfortable to wear.  There are no sharp edges, no metal to prick and poke, and no cumbersome bands that have to be affixed to the teeth.

Adding to the comfort factor is the fact that Invisalign aligners can be easily removed from the mouth when necessary.   Since the aligners are removable, eating is not hampered by orthodontic work.  Simply pop out the aligners before eating and any type of food or drink can be consumed with ease.  As an added bonus, since the aligners are not worn when eating, it is easier to keep teeth clean, since food particles do not get trapped between metal bands and wires.

One of the associated drawbacks of being able to so easily remove the aligners, however, is the opportunity for people to take out and leave off their aligners more than is recommended.  By doing so, the progress of the teeth straightening process is negatively impacted and teeth may not move into position as quickly as the dentist or orthodontist initially predicted.

Another drawback is that not every person is a good candidate for the Invisalign system.  While the orthodontic treatment can handle many of the same types of alignment issues as traditional braces, there are certain instances in which they are not the most effective option.  This is something that should be carefully discussed before you make any decisions regarding what type of braces or aligners you will use to straighten your teeth.

Cost is another concern for many people, since Invisalign is typically pricier than other forms of orthodontic treatment.  For many adults, however, the benefits afforded by this clear, almost invisible alignment system is worth the added cost.
