While many people may be tempted to jump on the Invisalign bandwagon as the more comfortable, convenient and aesthetically-pleasing way to achieve straighter teeth, it’s important for anyone considering the procedure to first evaluate some of the pros and cons of this orthodontic option in contrast to more traditional fixed metal braces.  Knowing what the benefits and drawbacks are of this procedure will help you make the most informed determination when trying to figure out if Invisalign is right for you.

Invisalign Treatment Option

For starters, it’s important to understand exactly what the system is and what Invisalign pros and cons are.  It is a means of aligning teeth through the use of a series of clear plastic aligners that gently move teeth into a desired position over time.  Each aligner in the system is designed to be worn for two weeks and once that time period has expired, the next aligner in the series should be used to replace the one that had previously been worn to continue the straightening process.   The entire set of aligners is fabricated based on advanced computer technology that can determine how to shift teeth from their current position into the desired position through a successive series of movements.

One of the biggest advantages of this type of orthodontic treatment option is that it is more attractive than metal braces.  Although the ultimate goal is the same in both, to properly align teeth for a more attractive smile, the process of wearing any type of orthodontic appliance can take as much as a year or two or even more.  During that timeframe, many people are self conscious about the way their smile looks when wearing braces.  This is especially true in adults.  The clear plastic aligners of Invisalign are virtually invisible in contrast to very obvious-looking metal braces, which makes this treatment option a clear winner for many.

Comfort is often another benefit of choosing Invisalign.  With no sharp edges or wires, the system is generally more comfortable for most to endure.  Gone are the days of scraped gums or sore cheeks due to wayward wires or brackets with sharp edges.  Instead, the smooth clear material sits over teeth in a similar fashion to a mouthguard, with no sharp edges to cause discomfort.

Convenience is also listed as a pro for those who choose the clear alignment system over the more traditional braces route.  Since the entire movement process is pre-determined and the patient is presented with a full set of aligners to get their teeth from point A to point B, all that is needed is a periodic visit to the dentist or orthodontist so that progress can be checked.  In contrast, metal braces require routine orthodontic appointments to have wires changed and brackets tightened, among other things.

There are a few disadvantages, however, that must be considered before deciding for sure that Invisalign is the best orthodontic treatment option.  For one, not every person is a candidate for this treatment.  Some people with severe misalignment of their teeth may not benefit from this system and would be better off with more traditional braces.  This is something that a dentist or orthodontist should discuss with each person individually.

Another drawback is that since the aligners can be easily removed, some people do not leave them in their mouths long enough each day to effectively do the job they are designed to do.  Although this is under the control of the user, the fact that the patient has the ability to remove the aligners makes it more likely that they will not be worn exactly as instructed.  Price can be another drawback for some, since the Invisalign system typically costs more than traditional metal braces.
