Lumineers have been enhancing smiles of NYC residents for over two decades. These cosmetic dental enhancements are modern, and aesthetically pleasing. They are contact lens-thin (approximately 0.2 millimeters), are super translucent in appearance, and resist micro-leakage and micro-cracking.

When considering between Lumineers vs. veneers, there are a few things to compare.  Traditional veneers require fusing or bonding to the teeth and as a result, a dentist must grind down the tooth to ensure a good fit. In contrast, since Lumineers are so thin, tooth reduction is not necessary and neither are local anesthetic injections. However, for those who suffer from anxiety when visiting their dentist, sedation may be offered to aid patients in feeling more relaxed when the procedure is done.

To begin, a dentist will evaluate an individual’s teeth to decide whether Lumineers are a suitable form of treatment. Patients who do not have a severe orthodontic problem or issue with tooth decay but are looking for a way to enhance the look of their teeth may benefit from the use of Lumineers.  This cosmetic dental treatment can alter the shape and alignment of teeth, making them appear straighter and more uniform, and can also fix teeth that are chipped, cracked, stained or otherwise have an undesirable appearance.

Once it is decided that this is the appropriate treatment for a patient, the process of fitting Lumineers only takes two visits, with the actual placement of the tooth coverings only taking around one hour. During the initial appointment, the dentist will take an impression of the teeth and this mold will then be sent to the dental laboratory. The mold will be used to craft the ultra-thin veneer. The shade of the Lumineers will be matched with existing teeth.  Uncomfortable temporary veneers are not required while Lumineers are created and once fitted, no post-placement effects, such as discomfort or sensitivity, will be felt. This means that they will look and feel natural and comfortable from the onset.

As for care, a low-abrasion toothpaste should be used regularly that can remove plaque, stains and tartar with ease and regular flossing should be routine. Individuals are not limited as to the types of foods they can eat and drink since the coverings are permanently and securely attached to teeth.  Care should be taken, however, to not regularly consume foods and beverages that can stain the surface, much in the same way as natural teeth can be stained.

It is best for individuals to visit their dentist every six months for a full dental check-up and patients should be committed to excellent oral hygiene in order to keep Lumineers in good condition. With proper care, these tooth enhancements offer unparalleled longevity and can be expected to last around two decades.  The actual lifespan will be most dependent, however, on the way in which individuals care for them.

If for some reason a patient no longer wants to have Lumineers attached to their teeth, the procedure is reversible. This is due to the lack of reduction in the tooth structure prior to adherence of the veneer. Following removal, the natural teeth will remain strong and intact.
